The African Export-Import Bank (the “Bank” or “Afreximbank”) today announced that it will be hosting the 2009 edition of its Annual Seminar/Workshop on Advanced Structured Trade Finance at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lusaka, Zambia during November 22-24, 2009.

The 2009 Annual Seminar/Workshop, the ninth in the series of the Bank’s Seminar on “Advanced Structured Trade Finance” is one of two courses on Structured Trade Finance run by Afreximbank. The course on Advanced Structured Trade Finance has course content that deals with more complex issues in structured trade and project finance. The second course titled “Fundamentals of Structured Trade Finance” is based on a course content designed to teach participants the main element of structured trade finance. The two courses are offered by the Bank in alternate years and represent the Bank’s core training programme in the important field of Structured Trade Finance. According to the Seminar Programme unveiled here today, the specific objectives of the 2009 Advanced Course are: (a) to complement the Basic Course run by the Bank in order to properly equip participants in structuring complex deals; (b) to create an opportunity for a proper evaluation and understanding of the new financing challenges that the changes in the global and African environments portend in the near to medium term; (c) to equip participants with the knowledge of financing tools and instruments that are currently being used or being proposed for use in financing African trade under the changing environment; (d) to understand the programme and facilities Afreximbank is, or will be, introducing in the near term to deal with the new challenges, and; (e) to create an opportunity for networking amongst African bankers.

This year’s seminar/workshop will be hosted by Afreximbank in co-operation with Bank of Zambia (BOZ), Bankers’ Association of Zambia (BAZ), COMESA Bankers’ Association (CBA), and West African Bankers’ Association (WABA). The seminar/ workshop is being organized for senior executives of banks, specialized funds, and trading companies in African countries. It is expected that the seminar/ workshop will improve the skills of these bankers and equip them with the capacity to structure bankable trade finance deals.

The African Export-Import Bank (“Afreximbank” or the “Bank”) was established in October 1993 by African governments, African private and institutional investors, as well as non-African financial institutions and private investors for the purpose of financing and promoting intra- and extra-African trade. The Bank was established by the adoption of its basic constitutive documents, namely, the Agreement for the Establishment of the Bank (the “Establishment Agreement”), which confers on the Bank the status of an international organization, and the Charter of the Bank, governing its corporate structure and operations. Afreximbank is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt and has two branch offices located respectively in Harare (Zimbabwe) and Abuja (Nigeria).
